Our 1-Day Paediatric First Aid Course is designed to give anyone who has dealings with children. This course gives an understanding of child and infant-related injuries, illnesses and other occurrences that require first aid.

This course meets all the standards as required by TUSLA under the childcare regulations 2016 for first aid for children.

This course is delivered by PHECC approved First Aid Response instructors.

Anyone who wants to be trained and certified as a Paediatric First Aider and deliver first aid care focussing on children. This course is especially designed for people working in child care.

On completion of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the responsibilities of the paediatric first aider.
  • Provide treatment for preserving life or minimising the consequences of injury until the arrival of medical aid.
  • Provide treatment for an injury to child or infant which does not require attention of a medical practitioner or nurse.
  • Understand paediatric related injuries and illnesses.

  • Module 1: The role of a Paediatric First Aider – On completion of Module 1, the student understands the role of the First Aider, the legal requirements and knows how to effectively ensure the safety of the first aider.

    Module 2: Patient Assessment – On completion of Module 2, the student will be able to assess a paediatric patient for (life threatening) injuries and perform a secondary survey to find out what happened.

    Module 3: Paediatric Basic Life Support – On completion of Module 3, the student will be able to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on an infant or child and knows the principles of resuscitation.

    Module 4: Wounds, bleeding and Shock Management – On completion of Module 4, the student will be able to deal with blood injuries, to recognize the different types of wounds and treat them.

    Module 5: Minor injuries – On completion of Module 5, the student is able to treat minor injuries such as bumps, splinter cuts and nose bleeds.

    Module 6: Common Paediatric Conditions – On completion of Module 6, the student will understand the treatment of common medical conditions such as: asthma, croup, seizures, febrile convulsions, anaphylaxis and meningitis.

    Module 7: Trauma Emergencies – On completion of Module 7, the student will be able to perform emergency first aid to treat trauma related injuries like fractures, dislocations, burns and scalds etc.

The course is highly interactive with each theory session being followed by demonstration, practical tasks and assessment of individual skills.

Continuous assessment throughout the course. At the end of the session, a multiple-choice exam will take place.
