First Aid Response

Anyone who wants to be trained and certified as a First Aid Responder and deliver first aid care. This course replaces the Occupational First Aid Course and is the recommended standard for workplaces.

On completion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Deal with life-threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions in the pre-hospital environment until the arrival of emergency medical services.
• Provide First Aid for conditions not thought to be life-threatening but are necessary to prevent further harm before the emergency medical services arrive.
• Provide pre-hospital First Aid in a wide range of environments including work, home, and recreational settings.
• Display the requisite personal skills including composure, competence, and self-confidence while understanding their limitations.
• Recognise and be able to cope with the additional challenges provided by “Special Circumstances” for which additional training must be completed.

3. Cardiac First Response (CPR and AED, choking and stroke)
4. Common medical emergencies (asthma, diabetes, seizures, poisoning and fainting)
5. Injury management and shock (bleeding, bone injuries, sprains, strains and dislocations, shock)
6. Care of the unconscious patient
7. Burns and electrical injury care
8. Hypothermia and hyperthermia
9. Information management
10. Communications
11. The well-being of the First Aid Responder

Continuous assessment throughout the course. At the end of day 3, a multiple-choice exam will take place. Students receive a Certificate in First Aid Response on completion. The certificate is valid for 2 years.

Please note that First Aid Responders have to attend a 2-day refresher course every 2 years. This refresher course can be accessed here
